Sr. GCP DevOps Engineer 

About the Organization 

ESI provides direct support to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and its mission to accelerate the prevention and treatment of cancer. Our support of NCI includes the management and execution of IT projects sponsored by the NCI. 

Roles & Responsibilities 

GCP Responsibilities 

  • Setting up and managing GCP core services including VPCs, Cloud DNS, Cloud VPN, and Cloud Interconnect. 

  • Deploying and managing workloads on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Compute Engine, and Cloud Run. 

  • Configuring GCP IAM, service accounts, and organizational policies to enforce least-privilege access. 

  • Monitoring and observability using Google Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, and Cloud Trace. 

  • Managing GCP storage services including Cloud Storage, Persistent Disk, and Filestore. 

  • Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines integrated with Cloud Build, Artifact Registry, and Cloud Deploy. 

  • Infrastructure as code for GCP environments using Terraform and/or Deployment Manager. 

  • Implementing data security and compliance controls aligned with FISMA, NIST, and FedRAMP within GCP. 

  • Planning and implementing resilience, disaster recovery, and failover strategies within GCP using regional and multi-regional architectures. 

  • Configuring and managing GCP networking components including Cloud Load Balancing, Cloud CDN, and Cloud Armor. 

  • Integrating GCP services (BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Dataflow) with existing NCI data infrastructure as needed. 

General DevOps Responsibilities 

  • Bash scripting and Shell scripting for automation and system management. 

  • Setting up, troubleshooting, and optimizing Linux systems. 

  • Running Apache, NodeJS, Tomcat, Neo4J, and popular COTS software. 

  • Debug and trace applications in Dev as well as Production environments. 

  • Documenting configurations and enhancements. 

Basic Qualifications 

Education & Experience 

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field. 

  • At least 5 years of experience in the above roles/responsibilities. 

Cloud Certifications 

  • GCP industry certification(s) – Professional Cloud Architect, Professional DevOps Engineer, Associate Cloud Engineer, and/or Professional Cloud Security Engineer. 

  • Multi-cloud experience with demonstrated ability to architect and operate workloads across AWS and GCP environments. 

Technical Skills 

  • Solid understanding of Networking Concepts – IPv4, TCP/UDP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP, SSL/TLS, etc. 

  • 5+ years of experience in Linux system administration in complex data center environments. 

  • Coding experience with one of Java / Python / Ruby / .Net. 

  • Proficiency in at least two major scripting languages (Shell, Python, PHP, Perl, Ruby). 

  • Experience with HTTP RESTful APIs, JSON, and XML. 

  • Comfortable with source and version control systems like SVN and Git. 

  • Experience building and modifying CI/CD environments using tools such as Jenkins or Bamboo. 

  • Infrastructure as code experience with tooling such as Ansible, Terraform, or similar – with demonstrated use across both AWS and GCP. 

  • Experience with data security requirements aligned with any of FISMA, NIST, and FedRAMP Compliance sets – including implementation within GCP’s shared responsibility model. 

  • Strong technical understanding of storage platforms to design and implement disaster recovery, data recovery, data protection, and backup solutions across cloud environments. 

  • Experience with container orchestration platforms, preferably GKE and/or EKS. 

  • Familiarity with GCP-native logging, monitoring, and security tooling (Cloud Logging, Security Command Center, Chronicle). 

Interpersonal & Organizational Skills 

  • Passion and experience collaborating with development teams and minimizing pain points. 

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with strong ability to coordinate and collaborate tasks and activities within a team environment. 

  • Ability to work in a busy and complex setting, including working with all levels of staff within the government and familiarity with the nuances of government practices and processes.

Salary range for this position: $135,000 to $170,000 per year, depending on skills and experience. 
Work Location: Hybrid (1 day in office, 4 days remote per week) in Rockville, MD 20850
